Customer came in to the shop today looking for a full range sound option for his ’66 VW Bug. While it has been a while since we had one of these classics in our shop, we knew that due to the limited space within the VW Bug, our options were extremely limited.
Basically, the only real open space in the cab is under the rear window behind the rear seat.
For that location, we proposed installing four MTX 6×9″s in a custom box. This solution offers the full range sound the customer wanted with plenty of volume to spare.
For powering the 6×9″s, we would wire up a Zapco 2-channel amp to run the speakers in parallel at 2-ohm load. We would mount the amp onboard the custom box for easy access and a clean finish.
In the doors, we planned to install a pair of MTX 6 ½” speakers. For ouput, we went with a JVC AM/FM, CD unit featuring satellite radio and bluetooth integration.
Once we had an agreed upon box solution, Robbie started the process of custom building a box for four 6×9″s with an amp board. Starting with measuring the space and designing a box that would fit into place. Once the box was built to spec, then Robbie moved to finishing out the box.

Looking good!!!
Finally, install the 6 ½”s in the doors to complete the install…
